Weekend Box Office Preview: Verity Eyes a $25–35M Opening as Digger Trails Behind

Posted on October 1, 2026 by xaldris-sl1

The October 2–4 weekend looks like a two-title conversation at the North American box office—and the early tracking says Amazon MGM’s Verity is the one with the louder opening weekend.

Industry estimates circulating around September 30 put the Colleen Hoover adaptation, led by Anne Hathaway, in a roughly $25–35 million opening range from about 3,510 theaters. That is the kind of debut that would make Verity the clear weekend leader if it lands near the middle or high end of the band. Hoover’s built-in readership has already proven it can move tickets when the adaptation feels like an event; Hathaway’s name recognition widens the net beyond BookTok core fans.

Coming in behind that projection is Warner Bros’ Digger, the environmental satire pairing Tom Cruise with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Tracking for Digger has been softer and more scattered depending on the outlet—roughly in an $8–15 million opening zone—suggesting curiosity without the same pre-sold intensity. Cruise remains a global draw, and Iñárritu’s prestige cachet keeps awards chatter alive, but satire with an ecological bent is a tougher mass-market sell on opening weekend than a glossy, twisty Hoover thriller.

Can star power alone close the gap?

Probably not in the first three days. Opening-weekend math still favors clear genre hooks and fan bases that show up early. Verity has both: a bestselling source novel and a marketing lane that leans into secrets, manuscripts, and domestic unease. Digger has craft and celebrity, which often pay off in longer legs, international play, and critical conversation—but those strengths do not always translate into a Friday-night stampede.

Theater counts tell part of the story. A footprint near 3,510 screens for Verity signals confidence from Amazon MGM and exhibitors alike. Wide release at that scale means the film does not need perfect per-screen averages to post a headline number; it needs solid multiplex traffic and a clean word-of-mouth handoff into week two.

For exhibitors, the weekend is less about crowning a permanent champion than about which title owns the watercooler on Monday. If Verity opens north of $30 million, the narrative writes itself: Hoover adaptations still convert. If Digger over-indexes versus the softer tracking, the story becomes Cruise’s ability to drag adult-skewing original material into the conversation even when the genre is tricky.

Either way, October’s first full movie weekend already has a shape: a book-to-screen thriller expected to lead, and a star-director satire hoping legs and curiosity outrun a quieter launch. Final grosses will settle the argument—but heading into Friday, Verity is the title with the clearer path to first place.
