Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Drops a New Clip Ahead of September 18 Release

Posted on September 4, 2026 by xaldris-sl1

Horror fans just got another jolt of Raccoon City. Sony Pictures has circulated a new video clip for Resident Evil, Zach Cregger’s live-action reboot of Capcom’s survival-horror franchise, and the timing could not be sharper: North American theaters open the film on September 18, with a Fantastic Fest premiere the night before.

The clip, which surfaced around Sony’s State of Play window earlier this week, puts Austin Abrams front and center as Bryan, a medical courier whose routine delivery spirals into an outbreak night. Abrams — fresh off attention from Weapons and earlier turns in Euphoria — plays the outsider dropped into chaos rather than a franchise veteran with a known badge. That choice already signals how Cregger wants to reset the mythology: less “chosen agent,” more “ordinary person in the wrong city at the wrong hour.”

A reboot that leans into game DNA

Unlike the long-running Milla Jovovich series or the 2021 Welcome to Raccoon City experiment, Cregger’s film is being pitched as a return to dread and scarcity. Co-written with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4), the story reportedly runs parallel to the spirit of Resident Evil 2 while inventing a modern original path through the outbreak. Trailers have already teased ammo scavenging, typewriter-adjacent production design, and the grim humor of realizing your package run has become a survival sprint.

Supporting players include Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser — a mix that suggests corporate, scientific, and street-level viewpoints colliding as the city collapses. Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are among the producing partners, with Sony handling distribution. Budget chatter has hovered near the $80 million range, and the film was shot with IMAX presentation in mind, which hints at big-screen set pieces even if the emotional core stays intimate: one courier, one night, one city that refuses to stay quiet.

Why this clip matters now

September is crowded. Streaming calendars are packed with new seasons, and horror shelves are already loud. A mid-month theatrical drop needs a clear hook. The new clip does that job without over-explaining lore. It sells atmosphere — rain, neon bleed, silhouettes that do not look friendly — and reminds casual viewers that Cregger arrives hot off Barbarian and the smash success of Weapons. For gamers, the promise is fidelity to early-game tension: limited resources, closed corridors, and the sick feeling that the map is shrinking.

There is also franchise fatigue to manage. After six Jovovich-led adventures, animated spin-offs, and a previous reboot, audiences have every right to ask whether another Resident Evil movie is necessary. Cregger’s answer seems to be tone. He has described the project as a “big, scary ride” meant to feel true to the games’ spirit. If the new clip is any indication, the marketing is betting on panic and momentum rather than nostalgia montages.

Tickets are already in the wild via Sony’s official site, and the Fantastic Fest bow on September 17 will give critics a first overnight verdict before the wider opening. Whether Bryan’s courier bag becomes the season’s defining horror prop — or just another weekend casualty — will be clear soon enough. For now, the clip keeps the countdown humming, and Raccoon City looks ready to swallow one more unlucky visitor.

Resident Evil opens in North American theaters on September 18, 2026.
