Long before the hockey mask, there was a mother and a lake. That is the starting point for Crystal Lake, the new Friday the 13th prequel series from Peacock and A24, which lands on the streamer on Thursday, October 15. Fans who like to binge will be happy: all eight episodes arrive on day one.
Linda Cardellini leads the show as Pam Voorhees, the character Betsy Palmer made unforgettable in the 1980 original. The series picks up close to a year after Pam’s young son Jason drowned in the town’s lake. She still cannot let go of her grief, and when two strangers knock on her door asking questions about her past, events start to spiral. The question hanging over the whole town is simple and unnerving: who is Pam Voorhees, really?
Who is behind it
The show is created, written and run by Brad Caleb Kane, who also served as showrunner on It: Welcome to Derry. Original screenwriter Victor Miller is among the executive producers, which gives the project a direct line back to where the franchise began. Michael Lennox directs the first three episodes, Celine Held and Logan George handle the middle stretch, and Quyen Tran closes out the season.
Alongside Cardellini, the main cast includes William Catlett, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Devin Kessler and Cameron Scoggins, with Callum Vinson appearing as the young Jason. Harry Manfredini, whose eerie score defined the films, is credited for the theme music.
Kane has been unusually confident about his lead. He has said Cardellini will “shock and surprise a lot of people,” and the timing helps: she arrives fresh from her first Emmy win, which should bring curious viewers who would not normally pick a slasher title.
The trailer leans into a sunny, late-1970s summer-camp look rather than nonstop gore, hinting that the series is as interested in character and grief as it is in scares. Viewers in the UK and Ireland can expect the show a few days later on Sky Atlantic and Now, while HBO Max will carry it in parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. For U.S. horror fans, though, mid-October just got its main event.
