Girls Is Coming Back: Lena Dunham Reunites the Original Cast for a Five-Episode HBO Return

Posted on October 14, 2026 by xaldris-sl1

Some reunions are pure nostalgia. Others feel like an answer to a question fans have been asking for nearly ten years. HBO’s Girls is firmly the second kind. The network has confirmed that the comedy-drama will return as a five-episode limited series, checking back in with Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna about a decade after the show ended in 2017.

The news didn’t come out in a press release first. Lena Dunham, who created the series and played Hannah Horvath, announced it in a playful fake video call with her old castmates Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells. All five are coming back, so the core of the ensemble is fully intact. Judd Apatow, an executive producer on the original run, returns in the same role, and filming is expected to start in 2027.

Dunham has made it clear she never wanted to come back just for the sake of it. Her condition was simple: there had to be a story worth telling. That story showed up around her fortieth birthday, she explained, when the characters she had spent six seasons with started talking to her again. It’s a fitting way for this to begin, since the show always drew on its creator’s own stage of life.

From twenty-something chaos to the edge of forty

That jump in age is exactly what has HBO excited. Amy Gravitt, the executive who oversees the network’s comedy slate, described the revival as a move from the mess of your twenties to the very different pressures of turning forty. She suggested viewers would see how much the women have grown, while still recognizing the same flawed, funny, sometimes exasperating friends they followed around New York.

The limited series doesn’t have a title yet. Dunham joked during the announcement about just keeping the name Girls, a nod to how odd that word becomes once your leads are well into adulthood. Whatever it ends up being called, the joke hints at the tone: self-aware, a little awkward and happy to laugh at itself.

When Girls premiered in 2012, it became one of the most talked-about shows on television almost overnight. Over six seasons it followed four friends fumbling through jobs, relationships, art projects and spectacularly bad decisions in Brooklyn and Manhattan. It earned 19 Emmy nominations and won two, and its reputation has only grown since. A BBC critics’ poll ranked it number 30 among the 100 greatest TV shows of the 21st century so far.

A lot of its appeal came from how unfiltered it felt. Hannah dreamed of being an important writer and the show let her stumble toward that goal in public, loudly and often. Marnie wanted everything to look perfect, Jessa wanted no rules at all, and Shoshanna wanted a plan for every possible outcome. Seeing where those instincts have taken each of them ten years on is what will bring many old viewers back.

For now there’s no plot, no premiere date and no news of new cast members. What fans do have is a creator who waited until she had something to say, a cast willing to step back into the roles that made their names, and a network keen to see what forty looks like for characters who once made twenty-five look so messy. As reunions go, that’s a promising start.
