Imagine waking up in a hospital bed, seeing your mom at your side, and feeling absolutely certain that she is not your mom. That is the delightfully unsettling setup of Phony, a new eight-episode series that premiered on Hulu today, October 20, with its first two episodes.
Sam Nivola, who broke out in The White Lotus, plays Sonny, a dorky but well-liked high schooler in a small Oregon town who seems to know everybody’s business and help everybody out. His closest bond is with his mother Ellen, played by Connie Britton, who is a single parent and, awkwardly, also the principal of his school. Their relationship is sweet, if a little too close for comfort.
Then a fallen tree sends Sonny’s car off the road. He spends a week in a coma, and when he wakes up, everything looks normal except for one thing: he is convinced the woman calling herself Ellen is a replacement. Naturally, nobody believes him, so Sonny teams up with Mallory, a classmate played by Grace Brennan who is returning to school after years away, to figure out what is going on.
The show comes from Nick Paley, one of the writers of the charming Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, with Anthony King serving as co-showrunner. That pedigree shows. Rather than leaning fully into horror, Phony blends paranoid mystery with offbeat teen comedy, complete with a mischievous local beaver whose habits are better discovered than described.
Early reviews have been warm, with critics singling out Britton’s quietly shifting performance as both the mother and the possible imposter. Several have also compared it to Search Party and a younger Only Murders in the Building. The big question, of course, is whether the final episodes can stick the landing on the central mystery.
For now, it is an easy recommendation for anyone who likes their thrillers with a wink. Watch the opening double bill, then try not to stare a little too long at your own family over breakfast.
