The Runner Sprints to No. 1: Gal Gadot’s Prime Video Thriller Tops Global Charts

Posted on September 7, 2026 by xaldris-sl1

Amazon’s latest action bet did not ease onto the charts. The Runner, the 84-minute Prime Video thriller starring Gal Gadot, became the No. 1 movie in the United States within a day of its September 2 release — and by day four it had locked the top spot on Prime Video’s Global Top 10 list.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald, the film casts Gadot as a mother racing against the clock to save her kidnapped son. The premise is pure high-concept velocity: short runtime, constant motion, and a marketing push that sells urgency instead of lore. Streaming audiences clearly bought the pitch, even as critics and Rotten Tomatoes audience scores stayed chilly in the mid-30s.

Charts over consensus

According to tracking cited across entertainment outlets, The Runner vaulted past recent streaming rivals including Eva Longoria’s The Last Sunrise, Joel Kinnaman’s Icefall, and the fantasy reboot Masters of the Universe on the U.S. list. Globally it later overtook heavyweights such as Project Hail Mary, Henry Cavill’s In the Grey, Jason Statham’s Shelter, and Luc Besson’s Dracula.

That split — lukewarm reviews, runaway clicks — is becoming a familiar streaming story. Platforms reward finishes. An 84-minute thriller is easy to start on a weeknight and easier to finish before sleep, which can matter more than prestige chatter when the algorithm tallies completions.

What it signals next

For Gadot, the win arrives between franchises and prestige gambles. Her next announced project is the Doug Liman biographical thriller Bitcoin, already wrapped as of April, with no release date locked. For Amazon MGM Studios, The Runner is a reminder that star-driven mid-budget action still travels when the packaging is simple and the clock is loud.

Whether the film becomes a lasting favorite or a one-week sprint remains open. For now, early September belongs to a movie that treats runtime like a weapon — and streaming charts like a finish line.
