Fall box office just got a shot of adrenaline. Zach Cregger’s reboot of Resident Evil stormed theaters over the September 19–21 weekend and walked away with about $60 million in North America and $48.3 million overseas — a global haul of roughly $108.3 million that obliterates every prior opening in the 24-year-old live-action franchise.
That domestic debut more than doubles the previous series high set by 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which opened around $26 million (unadjusted). It also blows past the timid $40–50 million tracking range many analysts floated going into the weekend. Sony spent an estimated $75 million to produce the film, and while marketing costs remain opaque, the early math already looks healthier than the studio’s last attempt at the property.
That earlier try, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, limped to about $42 million worldwide against a $25 million budget and left the franchise in limbo. Cregger’s version arrives with a different mandate: treat the Capcom game’s dread seriously, keep the jokes sparse, and trust word of mouth. Early scores — a reported 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and a CinemaScore in the B+ range — suggest that gamble paid off with both critics and weekend crowds.
Cregger is not a stranger to overperforming genre movies. After the lean breakout of Barbarian in 2022, his 2025 hit Weapons became a genuine phenomenon, finishing near $270 million globally on a modest budget and earning Amy Madigan an Oscar. Putting him on a major IP looks, in hindsight, like the kind of decision studios talk about in panel discussions and then rarely make. Analysts have been quick to credit both his name recognition with younger horror fans and Gen Z’s durable appetite for theatrical scare rides.
On screen, the reboot reunites Cregger with Weapons collaborator Austin Abrams as a medical courier dropped into a viral nightmare in Raccoon City. The film sidelines the Alice-centric lore of the Milla Jovovich era in favor of a leaner survival story. That choice may annoy some longtime fans of the earlier movies, but it has clearly connected with audiences who wanted something closer to the games’ tension than to campy action sequels.
The weekend chart tells the rest of the story. Resident Evil took first place with no other major new wide release in its path. Last weekend’s leader, Practical Magic 2, slid sharply into second with an estimated $11–12 million. Long-running holdovers Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five — a reminder that summer’s giants are still earning, even as the calendar turns toward awards season.
For Sony, the timing matters. Video-game adaptations have been a mixed bag for years, oscillating between meme disasters and careful prestige wins. A franchise-best opening plus strong reviews puts this reboot in rare company and gives the studio an argument for a sequel before the year is out. For the broader fall slate, the message is simpler: there is still room for an original-feeling genre movie to punch above its tracking if the creative team has earned trust.
Whether Resident Evil holds in week two will decide how long the victory lap lasts. Horror usually drops steeply, but outstanding reviews and a scarce mid-September marketplace could soften the fall. Either way, Cregger has done what few studio filmmakers manage in 2026 — he made a familiar logo feel dangerous again, and audiences showed up with cash to prove it.
