Matchbox: The Movie Races to Apple TV This Friday: John Cena Leads a Toy-Box Reunion With a Spy-Thriller Twist

Remember the tiny die-cast cars that lived in your pockets, lunchboxes and sandpits? They’re about to go global in a very big way. Matchbox: The Movie premieres worldwide on Apple TV this Friday, October 9, and it is shaping up as one of the more playful streaming releases of the autumn.

Old friends, new trouble

The setup is part buddy comedy, part globe-trotting spy caper. A group of friends who have known each other since childhood see their quiet small-town lives turned upside down when Sean, their long-absent former ringleader, comes home. The catch: Sean, played by John Cena, is now an undercover CIA agent, and his return accidentally pulls the whole crew into a frantic international chase to save the world.

Joining Cena are Jessica Biel as Aimee, Sam Richardson as Crosby, Arturo Castro as Ted and Teyonah Parris as Charmaine. The supporting cast is stacked as well, with Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Randeep Hooda and Daniel Bernhardt all on board.

An action director in the driver’s seat

Behind the camera is Sam Hargrave, the stunt coordinator turned filmmaker best known for the bruising, long-take action of the Extraction films. That pedigree hints that the car chases here won’t be toy-sized. The script comes from David Coggeshall, and the film is a joint effort between Apple Studios, Skydance Media and Mattel Films, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger producing for Skydance alongside Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz for Mattel.

The film runs 2 hours and 6 minutes and carries a PG-13 rating for sequences of violence and action, plus language, so it sits closer to a family-friendly action romp than a hard-edged thriller.

Mattel’s next big swing

Ever since Barbie turned a fashion doll into a box-office phenomenon, Hollywood has been digging through the toy chest for the next hit. Matchbox takes a different route by skipping theaters entirely and heading straight to streaming, which gives Apple TV a nostalgic, four-quadrant title right as the weather cools and people settle in at home.

Whether it lands as a gleeful throwback or just a fun Friday-night ride, the premise has an undeniable charm: the kids who once raced tiny cars across the living-room carpet are now grown up and racing real ones across the map. Start your engines on October 9.
