Bright comic of friends laughing on a sofa in a sunlit living room while a vintage TV shows an empty comedy stage with a microphone

Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald Lands on Netflix, Letting the Late Comedian Tell His Own Story

Norm Macdonald spent his career making audiences wonder whether he was joking. Five years after his death, a new Netflix documentary embraces that mystery instead of trying to solve it. Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, directed by Judd Apatow, premieres on Netflix today, October 16, 2026.

Apatow has become the go-to chronicler of comedians, with films on Garry Shandling, George Carlin, Mel Brooks and others. This time he chose an unusual method: he did not shoot a single new interview. Everything on screen comes from the archive, including talk show appearances, stand-up sets, sketches, passages from Macdonald’s book, personal photos and home videos sent in by friends and fans. The result is a film narrated by Norm himself, or, as Apatow put it, by an unreliable narrator.

From Canadian clubs to Weekend Update

The documentary follows Macdonald from his early years in Quebec and Ontario through the comedy clubs to his famous run anchoring the Weekend Update desk on Saturday Night Live, and the firing that followed. Apatow organized the footage into chapters on themes such as his gambling, his time at SNL and his surprising love of Russian literature. The film runs a little over two hours and is rated R.

Early reactions describe it as fascinating and, at times, haunting. Macdonald guarded his private life closely and kept his cancer diagnosis secret for years before he died in 2021 at 61. Even with that much material, the man at the center remains partly out of reach, and that feels completely true to him.

For longtime fans, this is a chance to spend an evening with a comic whose work has aged remarkably well. For newcomers, it is a funny and slightly melancholy introduction to one of the most original voices stand-up ever produced.
