Sacrifice Erupts on Netflix: Chris Evans Plays a Washed-Up Action Hero Kidnapped by Anya Taylor-Joy’s Volcano Cult

Some movies tiptoe into your weekend. Sacrifice crashes in like an uninvited guest at a black-tie gala, which, fittingly, is exactly how its plot begins. Romain Gavras’s satirical thriller landed on Netflix on Friday, October 16, 2026, and it has quickly become the streaming conversation piece of the weekend: loud, strange, glossy and impossible to describe without sounding like you made it up.

Chris Evans plays Mike Tyler, an action star whose career has gone sideways after an unfortunate incident involving a flamethrower. His public comeback is supposed to be a charity party on a sun-drenched Greek island, hosted by a smug tech billionaire named Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel) and his pop-star wife Gloria (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike arrives on foot, loudly announcing that he is walking for Mother Nature, mostly because his agent (Sam Richardson) thinks the limo looks bad on social media.

A prophecy, a volcano and an applause test

Then the party gets hijacked. A radical eco-group led by Joan, played by Anya Taylor-Joy with that famous unblinking stare, storms the gala. Joan and her siblings grew up on the island under the watch of their father Gunnar (John Malkovich), and they believe an old volcanic prophecy: unless three people are thrown into the crater within three days, the world ends. They need a hero, a villain and a lover. In one of the film’s most absurd moments, the hostages are forced to help decide who plays which role, and Mike, desperate for a part, does not quite realise this is not the comeback he was hoping for.

Gavras, the French director behind the furious street drama Athena, co-wrote the script with playwright Will Arbery. The result swings between action movie, black comedy and fable about the ultra-rich trying to buy their way out of a climate crisis they helped cause. Charli xcx and Ambika Mod also turn up in an ensemble that feels designed to make you pause the film and say, wait, who else is in this?

Love it or loathe it, people are watching

Critics are split, and not quietly. Sacrifice divided audiences when it premiered on the festival circuit last year, and the Netflix release has reopened the argument. Aggregators currently place it in mixed territory, with a Metacritic score in the high forties. RogerEbert.com called it a film where you can feel the artistry even when it does not work, while IGN was far kinder and praised it as one of the stronger star-driven Netflix releases of late.

Nearly everyone agrees on one thing: Evans is having a great time. After years of square-jawed heroics, he leans hard into playing a vain, anxious, slightly ridiculous movie star, and his comic timing carries scenes that might otherwise collapse under the weight of the symbolism. Taylor-Joy, meanwhile, adds another intense, quietly dangerous loner to a career already full of them.

At just over an hour and forty minutes, Sacrifice is not a huge commitment. Gavras himself has described it as a roller coaster you have to strap into, and that is probably the best advice. If you want tidy answers, look elsewhere. If you want a bright, chaotic island adventure where a fading action hero is auditioning for his own doom, this might be the most unusual watch on Netflix right now.
