Four years after the first season turned a video game spin-off into one of the most talked-about anime of the decade, Night City is open for business again. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 lands on Netflix today, October 20, with all ten episodes available at once, and it is not the sequel many fans expected. There is no direct continuation of the original story here. Instead, the series starts fresh with a new crew, a new voice cast and a noticeably reworked animation style.
New faces, same city
At the center of the story is Weak, a once-celebrated mercenary who has lost the cybernetic upgrades that made him a legend. Stripped of his chrome, he is left wandering a city that has already moved on to the next big name. Running alongside his story is D, a nomad on a slow-burning revenge mission that pulls him closer and closer to corporate secrets nobody was supposed to dig up.
The clever twist is who tells the story. Much of the season is framed through Roman, a 12-year-old aspiring filmmaker who documents the lives of these broken grown-ups on a fuzzy, nineties-style digital camera. It is a smart way to put a human lens on a world that usually drowns in spectacle, and it gives the show its central question: when everyone is busy watching the fireworks, how far do you have to go to make your own story count?
Who is behind it
Studio Trigger is back on animation duty, with Kai Ikarashi taking over the director’s chair from Hiroyuki Imaishi. Hugo Award winner Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner and co-writer alongside Masahiko Otsuka, and Kanno Ichigo handles lead character design. The English voice cast includes Valeria Rodriguez as Roman Carax, Kimoy Lee as Talia Yang, Cesili Williams as Avida Yang, Daniel Wu as Kiril Yang, Brittany Lauda as Capri and E.G. Daily as Kyoko Tanaami.
Early buzz has been loud. Several outlets have praised the new visual approach and a soundtrack that reportedly includes The Cure, and some critics are already calling it a worthy follow-up to a season that won Anime of the Year at the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Should you watch it?
If you loved the first season, the biggest adjustment is letting go of the old characters. The upside is that newcomers can jump in without any homework. You do not need to have played the game or watched season one to follow Weak, D and Roman, because the story stands entirely on its own.
Be warned that this is still Night City. The show is pitched as raw and brutal, so it is not one for younger viewers, even if one of its storytellers is a kid. For everyone else, it is the kind of release that swallows a whole evening, or two. Ten episodes, a fresh crew and a camera that never stops rolling: this might be the binge of the week.
