Netflix’s most stylish British spy thriller is back. Black Doves returns for its second season on Thursday, November 5, and it reunites Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw for another round of secrets, sharp jokes and very bad days in London.
Where we find them
When season one ended, Knightley’s Helen had survived a messy collision between her double life and her marriage. Season two moves her into an even stranger cover: she is now living as the wife of the prime minister, which puts a spy for hire at the very top of British power. Whishaw’s Sam, the assassin with a soft heart and a dry wit, is facing what Netflix describes as a deadly ultimatum.
The trigger for the new story is an attack on Reed, their handler, played again by Sarah Lancashire. It sends the pair on a desperate hunt for answers, and it forces them to trust each other at a time when trusting anyone looks risky.
New faces in the nest
Andrew Buchan, Ella Lily Hyland and Gabrielle Creevy return. Joining them are Neve Campbell, Sam Riley and Ambika Mod, a mix that hints at fresh allies and fresh enemies. Season one won fans because it never chose between being a thriller and a story about friendship, and the new cast suggests the show is keeping that balance.
A busy week on Netflix
Black Doves leads a crowded week. North of North season two lands on the same day, Taken: Natalee Holloway arrives on November 4, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie starts streaming on November 8. Still, for anyone who likes spy stories with heart, Thursday night is already booked.
