Hope Hits U.S. Theaters: Na Hong-jin’s Alien Epic Divides Critics, Thrills Crowds

Posted on September 12, 2026 by xaldris-sl1

South Korea’s biggest sci-fi gamble just walked into American multiplexes. Hope, Na Hong-jin’s long-awaited return after The Wailing, opened wide on September 9 through NEON — roughly 1,500 screens, the streamer’s widest Korean-language theatrical push since Parasite.

The setup is pure Na: a remote village near the Demilitarized Zone thinks a tiger is tearing through the hills. Police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min), officer Sung-ae, and local hunters chase the mystery until the forest coughs up something worse — bipedal alien predators whose clan leaders are voiced/motion-captured by Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton round out a cast built for chaos.

Early reviews are split but loud. Action set pieces and Hong Kyung-pyo’s cinematography get near-universal praise; many call the first hour a master class in dread. The complaints cluster around length (about 157 minutes), murky alien mythology, and CGI that some find distractingly unfinished. Rotten Tomatoes has hovered in Certified Fresh territory as more notices land, with the consensus treating Hope as exhilarating even when it overreaches.

NEON is leaning hard into premium formats — Dolby, 4DX, ScreenX, D-BOX — to sell the theatrical “event” angle. Na has already teased sequel ideas, and the ending leaves plenty of runway. Whether audiences stick around for a franchise or treat this as a one-and-done midnight monster ride will decide if Korean blockbuster sci-fi gets another U.S. foothold this big.

For now, the verdict from the aisle seats is simple: bring earplugs, patience, and a taste for wild swings. Hope is messy, expensive, and frequently spectacular — exactly the kind of September theatrical swing streaming cannot fake.
