The Love Hypothesis Hits Prime Video September 23: Fake Dating, Real Chemistry

Posted on September 13, 2026 by xaldris-sl1

BookTok’s favorite lab romance is leaving the page. The Love Hypothesis, adapted from Ali Hazelwood’s New York Times bestseller, lands exclusively on Prime Video on September 23, 2026 — a global day-and-date drop for the fake-dating crowd.

Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate who impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) to convince her best friend she’s moved on. The stunt snowballs into a mutually beneficial fake relationship — rules, boundaries, and all the awkward hallway chemistry Hazelwood fans demand. Rachel Marsh plays Ahn, Nicholas Duvernay is Jeremy, with Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan rounding out the circle.

Claire Scanlon (The People We Hate at the Wedding) directs from Sarah Rothschild’s screenplay. Amazon MGM Studios is positioning the film as a flagship September romance Original, and the August trailer leaned hard into campus banter, soft lighting, and that “are we still pretending?” tension.

Unlike weekly TV, this is a one-shot movie night: queue snacks, clear the calendar, argue about whether Adam is soft underneath the scowl. For readers who already dog-eared the novel, the question is fidelity; for everyone else, it’s whether streaming rom-coms can still feel eventful without a theatrical window.

Either way, September 23 is circled. The Love Hypothesis is Prime Video’s loudest bet that science-adjacent fluff still sells — and that fake dating remains the most reliable plot engine in the catalog.
