Clayface Molds a No. 1 Weekend as You Can See Everything Keeps Growing and Wildwood Finds Its Audience

The last full weekend of October turned into one of the healthiest frames the domestic box office has seen this autumn. Industry projections put the overall market at roughly $97.6 million from Friday to Sunday, about 29 percent ahead of the same weekend last year, and the mix of titles behind that number is unusually varied: a comic-book horror film, a marathon documentary, a hand-made stop-motion fantasy and a folk-tale comedy all found paying audiences at the same time.

Clayface takes the top spot

Warner Bros.’ Clayface opened in 3,458 theaters and earned about $10.4 million on Friday alone, pointing toward a three-day total in the $24 million to $25 million range. That makes it the clear No. 1 film in North America. For a character who has spent decades as a second-tier Batman villain, it is a solid result, especially for a film that leans into body horror rather than capes and city-wide explosions. The strong preview night earlier in the week hinted that curiosity was real, and the Friday number shows that curiosity carried into opening day.

The bigger test comes next weekend, when Halloween itself lands. A shape-shifting monster story could easily become a seasonal pick for groups looking for something gooey and strange, and a gentle second-weekend drop would mark this as a quiet success for the studio’s riskier DC experiments.

A documentary that refuses to fade

The more surprising headline belongs to A24’s You Can See Everything. The three-hour documentary expanded by about 1,800 locations to 2,655 theaters and actually grew on Friday, up around 11 percent from its opening day. Projections put its second weekend near $19 million to $20 million, which would push its running total to roughly $45 million. Documentaries rarely open wide, and they almost never rise in their second week. Word of mouth is doing the work here, and the film has become the kind of event that people want to see on a big screen with a crowd.

Wildwood opens in third

Laika’s long-awaited stop-motion feature Wildwood arrived in 2,942 theaters and is heading for around $11 million, good for third place. Laika’s films usually build slowly through family audiences and repeat viewings rather than exploding on day one, so a steady start is in line with the studio’s history. With school holidays approaching in some regions, the forest adventure has room to keep going.

The rest of the chart

Last week’s champion Street Fighter took a heavy fall, dropping roughly 74 percent to about $8.15 million for fourth place and a ten-day total near $46.4 million. Analysts noted that the video game adaptation has played to a very front-loaded crowd. Olivia Colman’s willow-husband fairy tale Wicker opened in fifth with an estimated $5.5 million to $6 million from just 1,471 locations, a respectable per-theater figure for an odd, original comedy.

Further down, the horror hit Other Mommy passed $51 million in its third weekend, while Verity and Resident Evil continued to add to totals of about $71.5 million and $153.6 million respectively.

Why this weekend matters

October is often treated as a holding pattern before the big holiday releases. This year it looks different. A weekend where a documentary, an animated indie and an original comedy all hold their own next to a superhero spin-off suggests that audiences are hungry for variety. Final numbers arrive on Monday, but the early picture is already a cheerful one for cinemas heading into Halloween.
