One of the autumn’s most talked-about thrillers has left the multiplex and moved into the living room. Verity, the Amazon MGM Studios adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, is available to rent or buy on digital platforms from today, Tuesday, October 27.
That timing comes just over three weeks after the film opened in cinemas on October 2, and it arrives with a strong box office record behind it. Industry reports put the worldwide total at roughly $162.7 million, about $71.5 million in North America and $91.2 million internationally, against a reported production budget of around $40 million. For a mid-budget, adult-skewing psychological thriller, that is a very comfortable result.
A ghostwriter, a famous author and a manuscript nobody was supposed to read
Directed by Michael Showalter, with a screenplay credited to Nick Antosca and Hoover, the film follows Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who gets an unexpected offer. Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) wants her to finish the remaining books in a hit series written by his wife, Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), who cannot continue after a serious accident.
To do the job, Lowen moves into the Crawford family home to sort through Verity’s notes. Instead she finds an unpublished autobiographical manuscript filled with confessions that are hard to read and even harder to forget. From there, the story becomes a tense game of trust: what is true, who is lying, and what Lowen should do with what she now knows. Brady Wagner, Asel Swango and Daniel Echevarria round out the cast.
Fans of the novel know the book’s reputation for an ending that sparks arguments in book clubs. The film has divided critics in a similar way, which is arguably part of its appeal: it is the kind of movie people want to discuss as soon as the credits roll.
Where to watch and what it costs
In the United States, Verity can be rented or purchased on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV. On Prime Video the listed price is $19.99 to rent and $24.99 to buy. Rentals give viewers 30 days to start the film and 48 hours to finish once they press play. Because this is a digital purchase window, you do not need a Prime membership to rent it there. Prices and availability can differ by country, so it’s worth checking your local store.
When will it stream free on Prime Video?
No subscription streaming date has been announced yet. Since this is an Amazon MGM release, it is widely expected to land on Prime Video for members eventually. Based on how other recent Amazon MGM films have moved from cinema to subscription, trade coverage suggests a window somewhere between late November 2026 and early next year. Until there is an official date, renting is the only way to watch at home.
Is it worth a rental night?
If you enjoy domestic thrillers built on unreliable narrators, slow-burn suspense and a cast trading quiet glances across a big, creaky house, Verity is a strong pick for a late-October evening. Hathaway in particular has had a busy 2026, and playing the enigmatic author at the centre of the mystery gives her plenty to work with. Watch it with someone, though. You will want to argue about the ending afterwards.
