The One About Matthew Perry: Netflix’s Three-Part Docuseries Lets His Family Tell the Story Behind Chandler Bing

For ten seasons, Chandler Bing turned nervous energy into comedy gold. Now the man who played him gets a portrait of his own. The One About Matthew Perry, a three-part documentary series, premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, October 27, nearly three years after the actor’s death.

Told by the people closest to him

The series is directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson, whose previous work includes Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. Instead of relying on talking heads who knew Perry only from a distance, it is anchored by his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, and by lifelong friends who have not spoken publicly in this way before. Netflix describes it as the first in-depth documentary about the actor.

The production also had access to the Perry family’s private archive. Unreleased photos and home videos trace the path from a funny kid to the rising sitcom star who became, for millions of viewers, their favorite Friend.

The laughter and the struggle

Perry appeared in all 236 episodes of Friends between 1994 and 2004. His gift was making everyday anxiety hilarious, and many of the show’s most quoted lines belong to Chandler. Off screen, he was unusually candid about his long fight with addiction, especially in his memoir, and he spent much of his later life trying to help others facing the same illness.

He died in October 2023 at the age of 54 following an accidental overdose. The documentary does not avoid that ending, but by all accounts it is framed around something broader: the honesty and advocacy that became part of his legacy. The official description promises a look at him as generous, funny, vulnerable and larger than life, along with candid new details about his private struggles.

Why this one matters

Celebrity documentaries often land in one of two traps: a glossy tribute or a grim true-crime retelling. With a family-led perspective and a director known for careful, testimony-driven storytelling, this series appears to be aiming for the middle ground, celebrating the work while being truthful about the pain behind it.

For Friends fans, it will be an emotional watch. For everyone else, it may be a useful reminder that the people who make us laugh the hardest are sometimes carrying the most. All three episodes stream on Netflix from October 27.
